STAR 99.1FM fuels growth with Advocace national representation

Star 99.1fm --A light in New York CityWhen the big station in the Big Apple changed to a contemporary Christian music format, business partnerships became a growing part of their total funding.  WAWZ, a listener-supported commercial radio station, needed a balance between the world of donor funding and advertising sales.

Although STAR 99.1FM has a large, talented staff, the station focuses on impacting the New York-New Jersey area with strong programming, engaging promotions, major donor programs and local business devleopment.  The results of the efforts of this team:
  • Two-time winner of the National Religious Broadcasters Station of the Year Award (2007 and 2008)
  • 2008 National Association of Broadcasters Crystal Award for community service
  • 2008: The #2 most-listened-to station among New Jersey listeners

The challenge

Even with a team of local business development professionals, station manager Scott Taylor saw that his team needed to concentrate their efforts on businesses with decision makers who could turn on the radio and hear STAR 99.1FM.  Nonetheless, Taylor knew there were good business partners from outside the coverage area that should be on the air, supporting the station's ministry.

The solution

WAWZ - NRB Station of the YearWith Advocace National Representation,
STAR 99.1FM keeps their attention on where they make the biggest impact: their local community.  Covering Manhattan, Staten Island, Queens, Brooklyn and almost the entire state of New Jersey is quite a task for any staff so Advocace National Representation scours the rest of the United States to find sponsors.

WAWZ was the first Advocace radio station to receive more than $1,000,000 in national funding--and STAR 99.1FM continues to grow with Advocace.
